In 2021, the Russian business community and government organisations were more focused than ever before on the climate agenda. The European Commission’s decision to introduce an EU-wide CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) instigated many heated discussions.

The proposed mechanism will be introduced gradually. From 2023, producers will be obliged to report on their products’ carbon footprint, and from 2026, will be obliged to pay the full fee associated with the carbon levels. If Russia launches its national emission trading system by this time, it should be able to reduce its obligations. But what if it doesn't?

Experts suggest climate projects run by industrial companies to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions beyond the scope of their direct activities should be taken into consideration. If these peripheral initiatives by Russian companies are taken into account by the EU, a new market for this type of project could develop. Moreover, the state could participate in this market (including at the level of federal subjects that have already declared or are planning to declare their own strategies for becoming Net Zero).

Today, there are more than 200 types of climate projects. Nature-Based Solutions, such as initiatives for reforestation or afforestation, and preventing and controlling forest fires, are particularly popular.

On February 16, 2022, the Climate Partnership of Russia will hold an online webinar entitled: "Forest Carbon projects - one of the tools to fully decarbonize the Russian economy: challenges and opportunities for international and national consideration". The webinar starts at 15:00 Moscow time.
