Forest Climate Project "Aviation Protection of a Forest Area from Fires"

It was implemented on the territory of the Nizhne-Yenisei forestry, the Symsky district forestry of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Russian Federation.
The first voluntary forest-climatic project in Russia on aviation protection of forests from fires. RUSAL hires and trains specialists who carry out air patrol of the territory, prevent and extinguish fires when they are detected, and also purchases the necessary equipment and equipment for them.
The project has been implemented on an area of more than 500 thousand hectares since 2019 after signing an agreement with the Federal Forestry Agency and the Government of the Krasnoyarsk Territory on the implementation of voluntary projects in the field of greenhouse gas absorption in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
In 2024, the project successfully passed the verification of the climatic results of the first five-year period of its implementation (2019-2023) by the St. Petersburg Scientific Research Institute of Forestry. RUSAL has published the project documentation in Russian and English on the website of the Russian Registry of carbon units.
In 2024, the RUSAL project was recognized as the winner of the All-Russian competition "It's about People" in the special nomination "For Preserving a green Future" and the winner of the international climate competition "Green Eurasia" in the nomination "Agriculture and forestry in new climatic conditions". The project was awarded a letter of thanks from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry of the Krasnoyarsk Territory "For its significant contribution to forest conservation as part of the implementation of Russia's first forest climate project."
In 2024, more than 1.3 million carbon units were credited to RUSAL's balance sheet for the implementation of this climate project. The company has already conducted transactions with them: through the mediation of one of the major Russian banks, the carbon units were acquired by the Arab fund Equity International in order to compensate for the carbon footprint of one of its assets. Carbon units were also bought by the Russian companies Carbon Zero and Biemtek. In addition, using the obtained carbon units of the forest climate project, in the reporting period RUSAL compensated for the carbon footprint of major international events such as the BRICS Climate Forum and the Eastern Economic Forum.
Effects:
The climate project will produce 5,152,843 carbon units
The project's implementation allowed the forests of the Nizhne-Yeniseysky forestry to be transferred to the "managed" status and several fires were extinguished, effectively reducing or preventing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing their absorption.
